Spicer Castle
In 1895, John Spicer—store, railroad and farming pioneer—built Spicer Castle on the shores of Green Lake in Minnesota. He chose the spot because of its spectacular sunsets. Life may change very quickly everywhere else, but at Spicer Castle, things have an uncanny way of staying the same. Our guests often remark that staying in the Castle, a national historic place, is like stepping back in time. When you watch the glorious sunset over the pristine waters of Green Lake, you'll understand exactly what they mean.
We do things the old-fashioned way here. Everything about your stay will make you feel as if you're traveling back in time to an era when gracious hospitality ruled the day. Each room is decorated primarily with original furnishings. Look for charming antique pieces like claw foot bath tubs, iron and brass beds, oak rocking chairs, French windows and original paintings. We've also fit in a few romantic touches like whirlpool baths and fireplaces.
The Kitchen at Spicer Castle
Our old-fashioned charm extends well beyond the furnishings and the hospitality, all the way to the kitchen. Our food is remarkably good. Guests frequently comment on how delicious our meals are. We make everything from scratch, and we bake and cook the way Grandma used to, with plenty of fresh creamy butter, savory meats, fresh veggies and hearty side dishes. Make sure you save room for our decadent desserts, including chocolate cheesecake and luscious lemon pound cake with three kinds of fresh berries.
There's plenty to do here, from hiking to swimming, boating to shopping. You can rent bikes, splash in the lake, or golf at one of the four nearby courses. When your day is done, however, we hope you'll join us back in the common room of Spicer Castle, to relax in front of the large picture window, enjoying the sunset that drew John Spicer here in the first place.
